‘Stop the Self Hate’: ‘RHOP’ Stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon Face Massive Backlash Following Stereotypical Comments About James Harden’s Beard, Co-Stars and Fans React

“Real Housewives of Potomac” stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon faced scrutiny from their co-stars and fans alike on March 3, following their viral discussion about James Harden‘s beard.

The conversation, which took place on the pair’s podcast “Reasonably Shady,” which aired earlier this week, began circulating on social media after TikTok user @gracereport shared the clip. During the show, Bryant and Dixon discussed Harden being traded from the Nets to the Philadelphia 76ers; the talk then shifted to his beard.

Dixon started off the discussion by introducing the topic of the trade when Bryant responded, “But do the Sixers know that’s James Harden? Because no one can see his face.”

She added, while Dixon laughed in the background, “That beard is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. The other day I was like ‘Who is this dude? Oh, this is Harden.’ How would you know that beard is down to his knees.” Things began to take a turn for the worst when the women started listing the items that may be in Harden’s beard, including fried chicken, grease and watermelon.

Bryant said, while discussing the sanitary state of Harden’s facial hairs, “Every time I see him, I automatically know and feel in my gut there’s fried chicken in the hairs. Fried chicken, grease.” Dixon jumped in and replied, “Watermelon.”

Bryant continued her rant by then accusing Harden of also having alcohol and drugs in his beard. “There’s some Colt 45 in there. Now I’m being real racist. This is horrible. I should stop while I’m ahead.” She added, when Dixon mentioned blunts: “There’s some blunts.”

Bryant wrapped up her statement by indicating that Harden’s beard smells like weed despite not accurately knowing if he uses the drug. “The whole thing smells like weed. I know it does. I don’t even know if he smokes weed. We’re really sorry. Harden, cut that thing off.”

As the TikTok user’s post reached blog site The Neighborhood Talk, Bryant and Dixon’s “RHOP” co-stars Karen Huger and Wendy Osefo immediately responded to the women’s stereotypical remarks against Harden.

Huger encouraged both Bryant and Dixon to do better. She wrote, “This is not helping. Do better PLEASE.” While Osefo used two eyes emojis to express how she felt regarding the situation.

As fans began to view the clip, a handful of people mentioned they weren’t at all surprised by Bryant and Dixon’s comments. Others claimed how shameful it is to see black people tearing other black people down.

“It’s not surprising coming from the green-eye bandits”

“Here go the green eyes bandits being messy af unprovoked. Per usual.”

“Not shocked but still disgusted.”

“Yeah they wrong for this, black people can be anti-black too, this some bs.”

“Dear Black People, we have too many people that already hate us for us to hate ourselves. Stop the self hate.”

Bryant and Dixon have yet to respond to the backlash. Harden has stayed mum regarding the situation.

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
