It’s been 10 days since news broke that actress Tiffany Haddish and rapper-actor Common had decided to end their relationship due to their busy work schedules. Now Common is breaking his silence for the first time and explaining in detail what led to their “mutual” decision.
In a recent interview with Jason Lee on “Hollywood Unlocked,” Common addressed the news by first singing Haddish’s praises. “First of all, I want to say Tiffany, as you know, is for me, like, one of the best people I met in life. One of the best-hearted and most authentic and caring people that I met in life, and that’s what made me love her and be in love with her and want to be in a relationship with her and grow with her.”
He also stated that they “had a real healthy and loving relationship. It was probably the most mature relationship I’ve been in. The communication, the respect, just all around, man.” Common went on to explain that “dealing with the pandemic” allowed him and Haddish to pay more attention to their relationship than he has been able to do in the past because, with his line of work, he’s always “on the move.”
The 49-year-old continued saying things began to shift once work started to pick up again. “Well I think once Tiffany and I got back on the move it really didn’t allow for us to spend as much time and put as much energy into our relationship. I don’t think the love really dispersed. I just think it was just like, we weren’t feeding the relationship.”
While the “Just Wright” actor admitted that “love and partnership” is important to him, he realizes that neither him nor Haddish “were going to stop” focusing on their careers right now. “It was harder for me to balance all of that and keep the relationship fed.”
He added that they “came to the understanding that this is what’s going to be best for us to still continue to love each other and be there for each other is to not be in a romantic relationship.” Common explained that he did not “want to be one foot in and one foot out.”
Lee, who is friends with Haddish, asked if there was no way that the two could have made the relationship work despite their busy schedules. He said, “I feel like we discussed it we kind of gave it time; and I think because I care about Tiffany a whole lot I was like I want to make sure she was happy and if I wasn’t going to be able to keep that happiness then I didn’t want to do that.”
Toward the end, he said, “I feel like both of us cherish and valued our relationship and both have come out better human beings.” Haddish and Common confirmed their relationship last year around the summertime, almost a year after filming “The Kitchen” together.
