‘Keep the Dark Roots’: Fans Crush Over Nene Leakes’ Hair

Nene Leakes is loving her new hair! The original cast member of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” debuted her fresh appearance in a photo she shared to Instagram on Monday, Aug. 10.

Nene showed off her flat stomach in the image, wearing a white tucked and tied short-sleeved shirt with blue sweatpants. The 52-year-old reality star looked radiant with her rosy cheeks, gold eyeshadow and pink lipstick. Her straight honey blond tresses extended past her shoulders and were enhanced with dark brown roots that faded to light brown. Her hair was neatly parted down the middle. Standing in front of a brown cabinet, Nene struck her pose by placing her hands behind her head and flaunting her pearly white teeth. She wrote in her caption: “One wish❤️…Dark roots.”

The “Glee” alum received over 42,000 likes and some 700 comments from fans complimenting her on her look. An IG user gushed underneath the photo: “Keep the dark roots❤️,” while a second person said, “Come throuuuuu huniii😍😍.” A third fan commented, “@neneleakes You can carry dark roots 🔥,” followed by someone else who wrote, “🔥🔥🔥🔥 KILLIN IT.”

The mother of two has rocked a slew of fabulous hairstyles throughout the seasons of “RHOA,” and she’s not ditching her signature blond hairpieces anytime soon. Nene wore a short honey blond pixie cut from seasons four through seven, but she departed from the show in season eight to focus on other business endeavors. She returned to the show two seasons later, where she showed off her blond shoulder-length tresses.

One fan wanted Nene to switch up her blond appearance, asking her in an Instagram post that dates back to last year: “When are you going to change the hair colors? REALLY?” The Swagg Boutique owner replied: “NEVER! When the f— u gone change yours.” It’s unclear which hairstyle she will sport for the upcoming season of “RHOA” if she chooses to return for the show’s 13th season, since her contract with Bravo reportedly is still being negotiated.

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
