The Oakland native told the publication that when she first shared the retirement news, she was at a point in her life where she didn’t want to make music anymore. Cole’s decision ultimately changed following the passing of her biological mother, Frankie Lons. Lons died last July after reportedly suffering a drug overdose while celebrating her 61st birthday.

Cole said, “For a second, I told myself I just [wasn’t] going to do music anymore. But that was before my mom passed and then a lot more happened. I had already signed my deal that I have in place, so I have to fulfill that obligation.”

She added, “But not only that, after my mother passed it put a bunch of other things into perspective for me. So I decided to finish my obligation, to release this last album—the last one I plan to put out.”

As for what life will look like for Cole after retirement, the singer informed Essence that she plans on having a biopic based on her life.

She said when discussing the film, “There’s so much that I still want to do. I want to do this movie on my life. It has been brought up [but] there were certain things I didn’t like, so we just didn’t do it. Now, that’s going to happen.”

Cole also listed the other things she wants to do, including owning several businesses and being a “full-blown mom” to her two sons Daniel Gibson Jr., 12, and 2-year-old Tobias Khale.

No additional details surrounding Cole’s last album have been released.
