Serena Williams Joins Her Sister Venus In Barbie Doll Franchise, Turning Her Signature Curves Into a Celebration of the Body Critics Once Picked Apart

As a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, Serena Williams has one of the most impressive records in women’s tennis.

Among her 23 wins, some consider her 2005 Australian Open title the most impressive. She beat Lindsay Davenport in the final despite a back injury.

The victory became her seventh Grand Slam title and, at the time, her first major in 18 months.

Mattel is celebrating that moment again by honoring Williams with a signature Barbie doll that looks exactly like her.

Mattel sculpted the doll in Williams’ likeness, wearing the same outfit she wore during her 2005 Australian Open victory.

The outfit includes a bright green-and-white Nike top, a white skirt with green-and-white sweatbands, and white shoes. Mattel took it a step further by giving the doll Williams’ golden-brown hair and white headband.

This honor comes more than a year after Mattel released a signature Barbie for Williams’ sister, Venus.

In a statement shared by People, Williams opened up about the significance of having her own Barbie.

She said, “Growing up, I didn’t see many girls who looked like me being told there was no limit to who they could become. I want every girl who plays with this doll to see possibility—not just in me, but in herself.”

Williams reminded young girls that they can “dream big, work hard, change direction, break barriers, and become anything she chooses.”

Barbie’s Instagram account also shared a collaborative post with Williams to show her reaction to seeing the doll.

“Yay. Look, it’s finally here. It’s Serena Williams’ Barbie,” she said enthusiastically as she was handed the box.

In the video, the tennis legend wore an outfit similar to her 2005 Australian Open final look. For the updated version, Williams wore bright green from head to toe, including matching ankle socks, shoes with blonde curly hair.

The mother of two added, “And I’m especially excited for this because my girls love playing Barbies.”

Williams welcomed her daughters, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, 9, and Adira Ohanian, 3, with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

“And my little one just started playing Barbies all the time now so guess what’s happening, there’s a mama character. Mhm,” she said.

Examining the enclosed doll, Williams noted, “Strong muscles in my legs, I love that.”

Commenters on Instagram agreed that the doll matched her physique, also noting her “Beautiful legs muscles.”

A longtime supporter of Williams and her sister Venus wrote, “I’ve just ordered Serena to match the Venus doll.”

One fan pointed out that Mattel captured Williams’ famously thick thighs, writing, “I’m glad they captured her thighs.” Another said, “Love this for you! Congrats! The doll would’ve snapped even more if they gave it your iconic beads.”

Serena Williams’ hair and physique has long drawn admiration from fans.

Fans have celebrated her and her sister’ iconic braided hairstyle with beads. But Serena takes the cake when it comes to her powerful frame and her muscular thighs that set her apart.

Back In 2017, one fan wrote, “I want my thighs to be like Serena Williams’ thighs. Those are thighs of steel.”

Last year, some fans worried Williams had lost her signature curves after noticing her slimmer frame. In August 2025, she revealed she used a GLP-1 medication and said the weight loss eased her joint pain and lowered her heart disease risk.

Williams has since posted several photos showing off her physique to assure fans that her signature toned physique is still there. She has posted court workouts and fitted looks that remind fans her signature shape remains.

Mattel embraced the praise for Williams’ thighs by giving the doll fuller thighs than other Barbies.

Williams’ signature doll costs $45 dollars. Other celebrities who join the Barbie Signature Doll lineup include Lenny Kravitz, Debbie Allen, Whitney Houston, LeBron James, and more.

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
