Donald Trump’s marriage has confused the public for years.
The president and first lady Melania Trump have spent more than two decades as a married couple. Yet from the outside, their public appearances look completely staged.
Melania has swatted away Trump’s hand, dodged his kisses and disappeared from his side for long stretches. Those moments have fueled questions about how close the first couple really is.
Therefore, few might expect him to have a jealous outburst when another man gets too close to his wife.
However, one man did—or at least Trump saw it that way, and it ended badly.
According to his inner circle, even getting along with Melania is enough to ruffle Trump’s feathers.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci learned that firsthand during a dinner in the White House Blue Room.
The seating chart had placed him next to the first lady. Scaramucci, who says he always had a “good rapport” with Melania. But he says Trump spotted the two together he immediately got angry.
“For some reason I was sitting next to Melania. And he got pissed at me,” Scaramucci said on Aug. 9 episode of the Daily Beast podcast.
“He’s a taller guy than me. And he looked over and looked down at me and he’s like: ‘Why are you sitting next to my wife?'”
Scaramucci was stunned. “And I looked at him and I’m like: ‘I have no idea. First of all, do you think I made the place cards? I have no idea why I’m sitting next to your wife,'” he said.
Trump changed his disposition after it registered to him that his former aide had nothing to do with the seating chart.
Still, the former Goldman Sachs executive walked away believing the outburst wasn’t really about place cards: “I think it unnerves him when people have a good rapport with her.”
Scaramucci’s chaotic stint as communications director lasted 10 days in July 2017. He’s since become one of his former boss’ most vocal critics.
He claims Melania once held the power to tell her husband to “tone it down,” adding, “There’s very few people that Trump listens to.”
Their relationship looks very different today. He suggested that the Trumps have “probably grown apart,” but Melania will keep fulfilling her duties to avoid embarrassing her husband.
“He’s the president of the United States and she will serve as first lady,” Scaramucci shared. “But I think it’s pretty clear that they’re not living together.”
Melania’s scarce appearances have intensified following a report about absences. She made 47 public appearances after Trump’s January 2025 inauguration, but just 38 in the first seven months of 2026 — far fewer than her predecessors.
Author Michael Wolff claimed her absence draws attention away from a president who “can’t stand anyone else being the center of attention.”
During a May speech, Trump praised Melania’s self-titled documentary before adding an odd admission:
“I don’t like success with people in the family,” the POTUS told a crowd of New York Republicans. You have to remember there’s one star in a family.”
“There’s only room, remember this, for one star in a family.’ So I better get rid of that. That’s not so good,” Trump stated. “But people love her.”
Online critics wondered if Trump felt jealous as his wife became the film’s red-carpet star over him.

Melani later popped up alongside her husband’s 80th birthday at his White House UFC Event. She sat next to Trump at the 2026 World Cup football final in New Jersey in July. So far this month, she has not been seen.
Still, Scaramucci believes their marriage is a “transactional contractual relationship,” though he has never seen an actual contract.
Asked whether Trump would rather spend a weekend with Melania or longtime aide Natalie Harp, Scaramucci wouldn’t answer for him.
“Go by his actions,” he said, pointing to Trump’s schedule and “who’s traveling with him.” As for Melania, Scaramucci doesn’t believe she “wants anything to do with this.”
In internet had its own theories, speculating about what really set Trump off in the Blue Room.
One commenter said, “Melania’s absence is because she can’t stand [President Trump] at all anymore. She stays away from him as much as she possibly can. When she does show up, it’s because she is paid a hefty sum to stand next to him for a few minutes. Then she runs for the exit as fast as she can to get away from him.”
Many called their union a “marriage of convenience,” suggesting Melania has no interest in being first lady.
“Invisible first lady … be stunned if she doesn’t hate Trump’s guts,” one person wondered. “Divorce after his term?”
Some directed heat at Scaramucci. One defender said, “To be fired by Trump is a badge of honour. Obviously he is one of the good guys and we know Trump can’t stand that.”
That makes his Blue Room story particularly ironic. Trump once allegedly demanded to know why another man was sitting next to his wife. Years later, the person least interested in sitting next to Trump may be Melania herself.
