Porsha Williams shocked the world when she revealed her relationship with Simon Guobadia, the ex-husband of ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ co-star, Faylynn Guobadia.
The world will soon get to look at Porsha from another angle on Bravo’s new spinoff series, “Porsha’s Family Matter.” It also features her mother, Diane, her sister, Lauren, two aunts, and her ex-fiancé and CEO of The Hot Dog Factory, Dennis McKinley.
We caught up with Porsha on Thursday, Nov. 18, to talk about her new series and how she implemented a co-parenting plan to support her blended family.
Dennis and Porsha’s former romance played out on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” which also documented the birth of their now 2-year-old daughter, Pilar Jhena McKinley. Their relationship ended due to Dennis admitting to cheating while Williams was pregnant. Although they attempted to reconcile and got engaged, the two eventually ended their relationship in 2019.
“We’ve always been good co-parents. We’ve been broken up for some time, and we have truly taken time to work on being co-parents,” Williams explained. “I just feel like when your family is used to someone, they’re used to that person. I co-parent with Dennis by transitioning him into a family member as opposed to just an outsider who’s Pilar’s dad. I still wanted him to be around my family.”
She added that “[Dennis] still had a close relationship with my family,” including some who were initially resistant to accepting Simon due to an already-established bond with Dennis.
“I think that when it came to bringing in someone new. It was like, ‘Where is the space for this new person? How do we figure this out? How do we blend?’ But also, ‘How do we do it in a really big way?’” Williams continued. “So you have to really watch the show to really see all the dynamics and see how some people change and choose this side and that side. It gets pretty crazy, but we’re figuring it.”
According to the “Porsha’s Family Matter” trailer, there’s tension between her ex-fiancé and her new fiancé. But on a positive note, it also features Porsha and Simon’s engagement, although they recently halted wedding plans to turn their first house into a home.
“We just closed on our first home together. It’s so nice,” said Williams. “So I haven’t really been doing a lot of planning because we’re going to be moving and everything.”
She said, “Once I get settled, I will get into the nitty-gritty of the planning. But right now, we are just getting our family settled.”
In the beginning, many linked Porsha and Simon’s quick engagement to an unplanned pregnancy, though she denied it. Porsha said she hopes to have more children in the future, despite battling with “large fibroids,” which allows non-cancerous tumors to grow in the uterus and can affect her ability to carry a child. She had a myomectomy to remove her fibroids in Sept. 2018 and a non-surgical procedure this year in November to relieve symptoms such as pelvic pain and bloating.
“The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Porsha’s Family Matter” premiered Sunday, Nov. 28, at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
