In November, when Omarion Grandberry was asked about what he thought about his ex Apryl Jones dating his former B2K band mate Lil Fizz, he said it didn’t really bother him much. Grandberry also said, “If they’re happy, then they should be happy.”
It was a response that many praised the singer for, and he was called mature, as well as good-natured.
Now in a new interview with MadameNoire, Grandberry talked about that response and the mentality behind it.
Earlier this month, there was talk that Fizz and Jones broke up, and during a recent interview Jones said they’re just focusing on their children.
“The most important thing about understanding where I’m at is, I did a lot of self-reflecting,” said Grandberry about his ex and former band mate. “You have to know yourself well enough to know how far you would go. In my self-reflecting I realized that maybe I would take it too far.”
“Maybe I would go further and there would be certain consequences that wouldn’t just affect me, but it would affect my kids,” he added.
But the “Ice Box” singer admitted that he wasn’t always so laid-back about Fizz and Jones’ romance.
“I realized, a lot of situations and circumstances are really out of your control,” he stated. “The only power you have is the way that you react. In order to really get a grip on that, you almost have to go through all of the emotions. You have to go through the ups and downs to really be able to root yourself and focus on what’s important.”
“You’ve got to self-reflect in order to become wise enough or mature enough to recognize that if you’re going to make a decision about something, there’s consequences and you have to be OK with those consequences,” continued the R&B star. “So I just made the decision to be respectful to my kids and to be respectful to myself.”
During his interview, the singer was asked if Jones was correct when she said that he wanted to leave after their second child was born. The 35-year-old said it was just a matter of falling out of love and going through different changes in his life.
“I would really attribute her not understanding to lack of communication and upbringing,” he explained. “I was raised a little bit different than she was raised, and I think that is really, at the end of the day, always a thing in relationships.”
“It’s just miscommunication and different love languages,” added the California native. “So that’s what I would really attribute it to. People grow and some people grow out of each other. I would say that is, from my perspective, truly is what happened.”
Grandberry and Jones parted ways in 2016 and have two children together.
