Ever since Ciara met and married Russell Wilson, the singer has been faced with an onslaught of criticism over son Future Zahir Wilburn bonding with her Seattle Seahawks quarterback spouse, as he’s rapper Future’sson.
Speaking about the potential toll such unsolicited opinions could have on her 5-year-old son, who is the older brother of Ciara and Wilson’s 1-year-old daughter Sienna Princess Wilson, Ciara got candid.
“More than anything, it’s been something real on my heart,” she says around the 12:55 mark on the Monday, June 3, edition of the Facebook Watch show “Red Table Talk.” “I don’t think people think about the child when they make chatter about kids. Because everyone likes to weigh in on opinions. Adults, we’ll be fine. But the child is the person that has to read stuff. They have to see stuff.”
Ciara mentioned that when Wilson came into her life in 2015, he “jumped right in” and applauded when Future Zahir took his first steps and even attends parent-teacher conferences with his wife. There have been public displays over the years of just how committed the QB is to baby Future, including a recent moment when Wilson detailed becoming a stepdad on BuzzFeed’s morning show “AM2DM”.
“The thing that I’ve learned the most is that being a stepdad and then also having our little daughter as well, [but] being a stepdad, you really find out what love’s like,” he said in March. “It’s interesting. It’s easy to love somebody that’s blood and everything else, but when you can love somebody just like it’s your own child and everything else, that’s what real love’s like.”
In 2016, Future fans were outraged when a video emerged showing the rapper’s son calling Wilson “Papa Russ.”
“Hahaaaa Ciara out here ruthless af. Why would you post a video of that man’s son calling someone papa Russell. No respect.”
“Baby future should call him Russell. Anything else is Ciara’s doing.”
But the negativity has gone the other way, too. While uplifting Wilson’s interactions with baby Future, fans frequently diss his rapper dad in the process.
A recent example emerged three months ago when Wilson posted a clip of Sienna pointing out big brother Future’s facial features.
“Some step-father are just BETTER fathers then the actual father,” one commenter remarked. “it’s a gift from God.. 🙌🏾.”
They made similarly snide comments when baby Future turned 5 years old last month, remarking on how happy the child appeared compared to when Future gifted his namesake son with a Rolex.
“He didn’t smile like this when he got the Rolex! 😭IJS❤️” a fan said.
