Ahead of part two of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” reunion on Sunday, longtime star Nene Leakes set her Instagram account to private.
Leakes made the move before the reunion aired on April 14. The episode saw the star discussing the state of her marriage to husband Gregg Leakes, and she noted that things had been rocky between them before they got word that he’s suffering from stage four colon cancer in May 2018.
“It would be easy to make a decision about divorcing Gregg if he didn’t have cancer,” Nene admitted. “I don’t want to live my life unhappy.”
“It’s tough,” she later acknowledged. “We are family, period. Whether we are together or not. We share a 20-year-old son. I am always gonna be here for Gregg.”
“The reward might not necessarily be that we are husband and wife at the end,” Gregg added. “The reward might be that we’re the best of friends at the end.”
When reunion host and “RHOA” executive producer Andy Cohen asked if both members of the couple want to save their marriage, Gregg immediately responded in the affirmative, while Nene seemed more hesitant.
“I can’t tell you anything that I’m going to do,” she said. “I feel like I have been pushed up against the wall and I’m coming out like no.”
When Cohen responded by saying it sounds as if their marriage “could not work” Nene does not rule out another divorce from her husband of nearly six years.
“Anything is possible,” she replied. “We will just have to see.”
Online, fans have been weighing in on the divorce chatter.
“There is a special place in HELL for spouses that abandon a sick spouse at the height of their illness – Gregg deserves better than this narcissist selfish soulless monster named Nene – get her off the show NOW @andy #RHOA.”
“I Don’t Think Gregg & Nene’s Marriage Is Going To Last Long #RHOA #RHOAReunion.”
“Nene is ready for this divorce Gregg… #RHOA.”
Should the Leakes split, it would be the second time they’ve called things off. The two initially married in 1997, and after 13 years they split in 2010 and divorced in 2011. However, the two soon reconciled and remarried in 2013.
As for their current issues, Leakes has aired out her issues with Gregg on social media over the past several months. She asked her Twitter followers if it was usual for sick spouses to be “mean” and has made it clear that she feels Gregg is not always the kindest to her. In addition to fans saying Nene needs to lay off of Gregg as he fights for his health, he has stepped in to defend her, saying she has “given so much of herself.”
Presently, the couple is in counseling with Dr. Jeff Gardere, who has urged Nene to remove the word “grouchy” from her vocabulary for a while.
Still, all hope may not be lost. The couple recently celebrated the fact that Gregg completed six months of chemotherapy treatments, an occasion complete with a party with lots of good eats and a live singer.
