Lil Duval Isn’t Apologizing for Joke About Unknowingly Having Sex with Transgender Woman

A heated debate has begun online after comedian Lil Duval joked he’d kill a transgender woman if he unknowingly had sex with her and many are calling for a #BreakfastClubBoycott as a result.

However, Duval isn’t apologizing according to his Monday, July 31, tweet.

The controversy erupted after “The Breakfast Club” co-host Angela Yee asked Duval what he thought about transgender people in the military, Friday, July 28. Duval ignored the question and instead mentioned he was visiting North Carolina over the weekend, referring to transgender people with a slur.

Then, DJ Envy asked Duval what he would do if he met and later had sex with a transgender woman who didn’t reveal her gender until after they did the deed.

“This might sound messed up and I don’t care,” Duval says. “She dyin’. I can’t deal with that. You manipulated me to believe in this thing. My mind … I can’t … I’m gay now. I’m gay!”

Co-hosts Charlamagne Tha God and Yee disagreed with Duval’s joke and Charlemagne pointed out killing a transgender woman would be a hate crime.

Things became tense during Charlamagne’s appearance at Politicon Sunday, July 30, when two women slammed the radio show for having Duval on-air.

“We are not a joke!” one trans woman shouts at Charlamagne.

“Trans people are not a joke! Trans people are not a joke!” a woman shouts.

Duval’s remark led many to call for a boycott of the 7-year-old radio show.

One pointed out the major issue of trans women being murdered. The Human Rights Campaign reported at least 15 trans people have been murdered this year. According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, of the 16 trans women murdered in 2016, 13 were nonwhite trans women.

Others continued to lend their support to the effort.

Some agreed with Duval’s reasoning.

There also has been chatter about the fact that Duval should have a license to joke about the issue as a comedian. A similar conversation emerged when “Girls Trip” star Tiffany Haddish joked she would “drink the juice” to work with Bill Cosby.

Still independent.

We hope this story was worth your time. For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed Black-owned and independently run. We didn't get here by waiting on ad budgets that were never built to prioritize us. Our readers did that.

Corporate support for Black media has always been thin. Outlets like ours get roughly 1% of the $170 billion spent on U.S. advertising each year, and that margin is shrinking further as advertisers walk back the DEI-linked commitments they made in 2020. That's the backdrop. It's not why we're asking.

The wider picture isn't any steadier. Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under, it's rarely the ones built to center a Black perspective from the ground up that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
