Gospel Singer Erica Campbell Responds to Backlash Over Sexy Photo

Erica-Campbell-White-DressWhen Mary Mary’s Erica Campbell posted a new photo of herself on her Instagram page to announce her recent Grammy nomination, few could have predicted the firestorm it would spark in the Christian community. In the now infamous photo, Campbell is wearing a figure-hugging white dress that shows off her curves way more than some Christians expect to see from a Gospel singer.

A week later, the photo is still a hot topic. “I’m taking it in stride and I’m keeping it moving,” Campbell tells Essence.com. “When we took the picture I felt beautiful, I felt confident, I felt sexy and I felt strong.”

“I thought I looked cute,” she says jokingly, “but it obviously offended some people, which was never my intention.”

Campbell says soon after taking the photo, she sent it to her husband, producer Warryn Campbell, and her family, who supported her. “Our whole family loved it,” says her sister Tina Campbell. “You see grace, you see beauty, you see elegance and style. It’s wholesome.”

The criticism has Campbell thinking there needs to be a bigger conversation about Christianity and sexuality. “This is about confidence and realizing that God made you and that you are beautiful just the way you are,” she says. “I think that young girls shouldn’t only get sexy images from people who are not proclaiming Jesus. But I am. And I’m cute too.”

The mom of three is currently gearing up for season three of her WE reality show with sister Tina and the release of her debut solo album.

  1. Christianity has a lo of judgmental people..i bet you most wear pants…something prohibited in the bible…

  2. Saul Boubert says:

Christianity does not have a lot of judgmental people. People are judgmental by attribute. That dress is beautiful and she looks gorgeous. For those who are offended in the Christian community I say this, "He who has no sin, cast the first stone". If Campbell has done anything against God, he will be her judge and he will chastise her. It is our job to pray for our sister not judge her on her outward appearance.

  3. Is that hair hanging down to her butt? That is fake. Is this how christians suppose to behave? They don't even like their natural self that God made, I wonder what God thinks about that?

  4. Edner Joseph says:

My dear, I love you so much. I love your songs and your voice. I do respect your opinion and your style. But remember many times we do some things that are not undoubtedly sins but for the sake of weak christians we get to avoid them. God bless U!
