A fan at the San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers game fell to his death from an elevated walkway Sunday at Candlestick Park.
The fall occurred just minutes after kickoff, at approximately 1:30 p.m., police said. Witnesses say the man appeared to be intoxicated.
After the game, police spokesman Gordon Shyy said a police officer and an off-duty medic gave the man first aid until an ambulance arrived. The man was later pronounced dead from his injuries. Police said the man, whose name has not yet been released, appeared to be in his 30s.
In a statement, 49ers spokesman Bob Lange spoke about the accident outside the stadium.
“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time,” he said.
Since 2003, there have been over two dozen cases of fans falling at stadiums throughout the United States, according to the Institute for the Study of Sports Incidents.
