Jennifer Hudson Dishes on Weight Watchers & Her Biggest Fashion Critic

Jennifer Hudson’s weight loss has been remarkable. The former American Idol contestant has always had a love for fashion but living that Hollywood life before her slim-down, Hudson admits she wasn’t always able to take advantage of the latest trends. Since joining Weight Watchers and becoming their spokesperson, the Oscar winner has had a lot more fun with fashion. On dressing hew new frame she says,”It’s like I have more room to play,”…”Sometimes I feel like I’m my own doll, dressing myself up. All of a sudden, a shirt can be a dress, you know?”

Even the singer’s 3-year old son even gives Hudson seasoned fashion advice. “We call him Boss Baby!” Naturally, her son is her biggest fashion fan, although he does offer his criticism as well. “He says, ‘Mommy, I don’t like that,’ or ‘Momma, you look very pretty.'” Most parents dress their kids, but David Jr helps dress his mother…and she seemingly values his advice. “I totally dress for my child! I have T-shirts with Popeye the Sailor Man on it, ones with different animals, comic book characters . . . ”

With the holiday season in full swing, how dos the American Idol alum managed to keep the weight off? Good, old-fashioned hard work. “Going jogging makes me feel powerful and free — like Rocky!” Hudson says. “In winter I do the treadmill, the Stairmaster, I like challenging things. I always say to myself, ‘Just give me 10 minutes.’ If I do those 10 minutes — the next thing you know, it’s 20 minutes — I trick myself!”

When she’s not working hard to maintain her weight, Hudson is working hard in her career. Recently, the singer performed in her hometown of Chicago for Michigan Avenue Magazine’s second cover party. Her “A Hudson Holiday” show was at the House of Blues and proceeds from the ticket sales helped a good cause. Hudson and her sister Julia were presented a $10,000 check for their foundation, the Julian D. King Gift Foundation, which supports under-served children. The powerhouse singer was joined by The Voice’s Jamar Rogers, who performed his new hit single “High.” She not only wowed the crowd with her voice but she looked great while she did it. Apparently, her Weight Watchers diet regimen and her son’s fashion advice keep her looking fabulous.

Still independent.

We hope this story was worth your time. For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed Black-owned and independently run. We didn't get here by waiting on ad budgets that were never built to prioritize us. Our readers did that.

Corporate support for Black media has always been thin. Outlets like ours get roughly 1% of the $170 billion spent on U.S. advertising each year, and that margin is shrinking further as advertisers walk back the DEI-linked commitments they made in 2020. That's the backdrop. It's not why we're asking.

The wider picture isn't any steadier. Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under, it's rarely the ones built to center a Black perspective from the ground up that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
