Nick Cannon Calls Marriage a ‘Eurocentric Concept,’ Sparking a Debate Among Fans

It just may be Nick Cannon is never going to get remarried or be in a monogamous relationship again.

Cannon’s been a hot topic lately after having four kids by three different women in one singular year. In total, he has seven children, and fans have been questioning why the comedian and host is impregnating so many women around the same time. Some thought it was due to his complications with lupus, that he may just want to leave behind a lengthy legacy, but it turns out that is not his reasoning.

On Monday, Aug. 9, Cannon visited “The Breakfast Club” where he explained where he stands when it comes to being in a relationship with one person. He described the idea of having only one partner in a lifetime as “a eurocentric concept” and said the history behind marriage was “to classify property.” Detailing the history, Cannon explained, “a father gave another man his daughter for land” then later said, “I don’t want ownership over anybody.”

The 40-year-old described marriage as a business relationship or a “contract,” but said when a marriage takes place because of soul tie (as Charlamagne Tha God called it) then it is a “covenant.” “I don’t need a bunch of bad business relationships,” Cannon stated. “Now if we’re talking about the covenants, we can create our own covenant.”

“I will definitely be in covenant with people,” he added, “But when you talk about monogamy, monogamy is usually sex when you think about things with health and when you think about things you’re actually promising ‘I’m only for you, you’re only for me.’ I just don’t feel like that’s a truth of mine.”

Cannon also gave women praise and said they are the ones with the higher authority in relationships. He said, “all women are the ones that open themselves up to say ‘I would like to allow this man in my world and I will birth this child.’ So it ain’t my decision.” For clarification, DJ Envy asked another question that also may be on the minds of some fans that have been watching Cannon welcome multiple children back to back — which is if the women mind that he’s having children with other women.

“Obviously my life is on front street at all times,” he said. “They know how I feel.” He went on to talk about the responsibilities of marriage and how the “covenant needs to be honored daily,” but said if the married couple aren’t “bonded together, then you’re living in this falsehood.” He said he can’t go out and preach about living in his truth but at the same time be in a marriage “creeping.”

“So every woman that deals with me knows that ‘Well we know what it is.’ ” Having kids can take up enough time in anyone’s day, so another issue people took with Cannon having seven children was his ability to be present for all of them. Not only is he a father but he also has a radio show, a sketch comedy game show series called “Wild N’ Out,” and is currently filming for the comeback of the parody series “The Real Husbands of Hollywood.”

But despite his seemingly full schedule, he said “my children are my priority” adding that “it’s all about being present.” For those challenging his fatherhood, he simply said, “sit back and watch.”

Many fans debated Cannon’s comments and were not trying to hear it. One person said, “Eurocentric?? Broken homes aren’t healthy for either the parents or children,” and someone else wrote, “So monogamy is “ Eurocentric “ now? He just don’t wanna be faithful tell the truth 😒.”

Others challenged Cannon’s comments about marriage being a “eurocentric concept.” Someone said, “And not one Afrocentric baby momma 🤫,” and another added, “But you subscribe to the Eurocentric idea of making families with yt women. Hm interesting take.” The women Cannon has impregnated are women of mainly mixed decent or lighter complexion.

Cannon had his first two children, who are twins, with his ex-wife Mariah Carey. His next two came from model Brittany Bell, a son named Golden Cannon, 4, and an 8-month old daughter, Powerful Queen Cannon. In June, he welcomed twin boys, Zion and Zillion, with International DJ Abby De La Rosa, and a week later, model Alyssa Scott gave birth to their son, Zen.
