Amid Mo’Nique’s crusade to get fair paid fair her gender and race, Michael B. Jordan is taking steps to help the cause for Black women in his own way. His production company, Outlier Society, recently hired a Black woman as the head of production and development and that’s a goal the “Black Panther” star has always had.
“[Alana Mayo is] a strong Black woman, super creative and talented,” he told Vibe Tuesday, Jan. 30. “I always wanted my company ran by women and that was always my goal, my dream, so I got lucky enough to hire her to run my company. That is my first step in helping out that cause. What’s going to solve that problem or discrepancy or gap? It’s going to take a lot more people that are smarter than me to figure that out, but I want to be a part of the solution.”

Comic Mo’Nique recently made headlines for calling for a boycott of Netflix, saying the company only offered her $500,000 despite her résumé and giving fellow female comedian Amy Schumer $11 million. Her movement followed “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross’ pay discrepancy going public. She was reported to be threatening to appear less on the sitcom because of it but disputed that in a statement.
So as Jordan’s production company seeks to make opportunities for Black actresses, he also hopes to use it to tell “stories that aren’t often told through a perspective that’s not often seen from.”
