Trump Praises Melania’s Big Announcement, Then Reaches for a Handshake and a Kiss — Her Reaction Has Fans Zooming In

Donald Trump will share the spotlight, but he will never allow anyone to outshine him.

The president can masterfully turn anyone’s big moment into a blunder or a self-centered spectacle.

His wife, Melania Trump, is not an exception. The couple rarely makes joint appearances. As a result, critics speculate that the marriage is troubled.

However, the first lady emerged from her reclusive, private life for the Oct. 19 signing of the Women’s Health Division executive order and launch of a White House Women’s Health Task Force.

Trump told guests gathered in the Rose Garden the “historic initiative” was “conceived by Melania.” He briefly paused to look at his wife.

The admiration was followed by an admission that he initially doubted her vision.

“When I heard about it, I said, ‘Are you sure they don’t have that? Who the hell wouldn’t have a women’s health division?’ Melania said, ‘They don’t have it.’ So good job,” he recalled.

Earlier this month, the “East Wing” author Azadeh Moaveni described Melania as “misunderstood” on “The Mishal Husain Show” podcast.

Moaveni asserted, “I don’t think the public really has a sense of the things that she is committing her time to; they have actually been quite significant.”

The official first lady’s X account co-signed the message by retweeting the clip with a list of Melania’s accomplishments.

First, Trump undercut the praise to complain as he jokingly sneered, “Look at her. You think she’s easy? She’s not so easy, but she’s very smart, and she gets it.”

He then joined her at a nearby table. As Trump signed the order, he bragged, “Oh, that’s a good one. Wow.”

Melania ignored his enthusiasm and told him, “Give me my ‘Be Best’ pen.” Trump obliged and passed her a marker, much like his own, only it was in an all-white case.

Like his opening remarks, Melania was again the subject of a snide comment. “I don’t know if her signature means anything. But why don’t you sign? I think it does,” the politician said.

Melania smiled and said, “Yours is the most important.”

The public has never forgotten that Trump bragged there is only room for one star in the family — himself.

His routine swipes at Melania often leave people convinced he is jealous of the former model’s solo image.

Still, Trump gawked at her signature under his. “Hmm. That looks very similar,” he said, then held the signed executive order for all to see.

An X user wondered, “Is he looking at her signature for the very first time? How long has he known her?”

“He better hope her signature on the NDA means something,” a second viewer said. A third person believes Melania’s signature will be on “Divorce papers it will.”

The photo op also included another one of their awkward PDA attempts. A clip shows Trump grabbing his wife’s hand for a handshake and leaning in to kiss her cheek.

Melania pulled her signature move, turning her head away, making sure his lips only touched her hair. She held her hand limp in Trump’s before he slapped it and uttered, “Great job.”

“He pats her on the hand like a good dog,” one observer noticed. Another reaction read, “She really detests him, doesn’t she.”

Others noticed, “She looks disgusted” and “She can’t run away fast enough from him.”

A heckler recalled, “Melania Trump didn’t think twice about lip-locking Justin Trudeau when he visited the White House.”

She happily let former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau kiss her cheek at the 2019 G7 Summit. Many believe their steamy moment is the cause of Trump’s longstanding grudge against Canada.

The contrast is hard to ignore: while Melania once welcomed another powerful man’s affection, she has often kept Trump at arm’s length in public.

Meanwhile, the president loves to claim that people love and respect him. But when it comes to his wife, her unwillingness to embrace, kiss, or touch him is telling a different story.

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
