Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have kept much of their marriage out of the spotlight, but their public appearances have sparked plenty of speculation.
The chatter intensified after Ivanka stepped out without her wedding ring during a solo outing, while Jared was nowhere to be seen.
The couple have still appeared together throughout the past year, often alongside their children and extended family. Ivanka has also made several solo appearances, including another recent outing that left people wondering about the pair’s relationship.
The cameras inside the White House this week told a very different story about their marriage.
Photos showed Trump’s daughter sitting among some of the country’s most powerful people filed in for the biggest diplomatic moment of Trump’s second term.
The ceremony marked Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state arrival. He landed in Washington Wednesday for his first White House visit in more than a decade.
Trump and Xi delivered opening remarks in the Grand Foyer Thursday morning. They then attended a military review, held hours of talks and joined a black-tie state dinner that night.
Outrage erupted once people noticed Ivanka seated in the front row next to Vice President JD Vance, second lady Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
And the name card on one of those chairs read “Kushner.” It wasn’t for Jared.
“Who is next to Ivanka?’ one social media user asked.
Her 15-year-old daughter, Arabella Kushner, sat in the front row directly between her mother and Rubio.
Ivanka and Jared were married in 2009, in a ceremony at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. In addition to Arabela, they share two sons, Joseph Frederick (born October 2013) and Theodore James (born March 2016).
It’s worth noting that it’s rare for a president’s grandchild to get such prominent seating at a state visit event.
Yet her father, Jared, now one of Trump’s two main diplomatic envoys, was nowhere in the row. The White House has not explained Jared Kushner’s absence.
Two days earlier, he and U.S. Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff sat through a three-hour meeting with Iran’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Kushner and fellow New York developer Steve Witkoff have served as roving diplomatic negotiators in the current administration.
It didn’t take long for the seating chart to become the story.
One person shared footage of everyone seated during the event, asking why “alleged private citizen Ivanka Trump” sat near Vance, Rubio and Bessent.
Even Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren wanted to know who arranged the seats. Susteren pointed out in a tweet that Ivanka was “seated better than Cabinet Secretaries Rubio and Bessent” at a state visit.
Arabella has been taking Chinese lessons for years, according to Yahoo News. That’s also no secret to Xi.
When the Chinese leader visited Mar-a-Lago in April 2017, Arabella performed for him in Mandarin. Months later, Trump showed Xi a video of her singing and reciting classical Chinese poetry during his trip to Beijing.
But the Mandarin lessons aren’t the only thing people remembered.
On April 6, 2017, Ivanka and Jared sat beside Xi and his wife at dinner at Mar-a-Lago. That same day, China’s trademark office granted provisional approval to three trademarks for Ivanka’s brand, the New York Post reported at the time.
China’s foreign ministry later brushed off the questions as media “hyping certain gossip.”
The approvals kept coming.
By April 2019, China had granted 41 trademarks to companies linked to Ivanka. China approved the trademarks she filed after her father’s 2016 win roughly 40 percent faster than those she filed before it. She had applied for 17 new Chinese trademarks the day before she officially joined the White House staff.
Online, the replies under Aaron Rupar’s post piled up fast.
“It’s because they view themselves as an American royal family. It’s pathetic,” one person wrote.
Another added, “Nothing screams drain the swamp like the president’s daughter getting a front row seat next to the VP and cabinet officials.”
“Ivanka Trump got a lot of patents from China, thanks her dad being ‘ president ‘; I’m sure she’s there for more,” a third said.
One user kept it short, joking, “Its Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.”
A few pushed back, arguing Arabella’s language skills were the whole point. “Because her daughter is fluent in Mandarin maybe?” one wrote.
Ivanka has worked hard to sell the idea that she’s moved on. She stayed out of her father’s second administration. In May, she told podcast host David Senra that she and Jared left the first term proud. She later admitted they were “drinking water through a fire hose.”
Her attention since has shifted to business abroad. Her focus has since shifted to business abroad. She and Kushner are behind a proposed $1.4 billion luxury resort on Albania’s Sazan Island through his private equity firm.
