Janet Jackson is getting through her week with some powerful affirmations amid much talk surrounding the Hulu documentary “Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson” that takes another look at her career and the infamous 2004 Super Bowl halftime performance alongside Justin Timberlake where the “Rhythm Nation” singer suffered an allegedly planned wardrobe malfunction and its subsequent backlash.
On Monday, Nov. 22, the Grammy-winning entertainer took to her Instagram page, where she uploaded a cryptic quote just days after the doc aired that read: “Not sure if you got the memo. But, we’re not competing anymore, we’re appreciating and uplifting each other instead.”
The “Any Time, Any Place,” singer didn’t mention the documentary specifically. However, fans were quick to point out that Timberlake reacted to the post by liking it. The “Say Something” singer had often been criticized for the way he responded to the scandal by making light of the severity of the situation when questioned about it.
Meanwhile, Jackson was made to publicly apologize after Timberlake tore off a piece of her costume and exposed her breast to viewers. The movie also takes a look at how Jackson’s career took a hit in the aftermath of the incident, while Timberlake’s flourished. The “Cry Me a River ” singer won two Grammy awards that year — Jackson was disinvited.
In a recent interview, Jackson’s former stylist Wayne Scot Lukas told Page Six the R&B crooner did not want to be associated with the film in any manner, telling the outlet, “She wants that documentary to go away. She didn’t ask for a ‘Free Janet’ documentary. She’s not interested.”
The “All For You” singer declined to be involved with the creation by Hulu and FX and presented by The New York Times. She reportedly urged others including Lukas to do the same. “She asked us not to do it,” the stylist claimed. “She wants to tell her own story.”
Fans have shown overwhelming support amid the film’s release, including one Twitter user who wrote, “Sorry your going through this Janet them people need to leave that alone it’s been years besides why folks was getting worked up you can’t help a accident much love for you janet!”
