Let’s Goooo: Anthony Mackie Returning for ‘Captain America 4’

Anthony Mackie has closed the deal to return as Sam Wilson in “Captain America 4,” Variety reports.

The script is being written by Malcolm Spellman, who is the head writer for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+ and Dalan Musson, a staff writer with the show.

Fans are hopeful that with Mackie returning to the film, others from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will also make appearances in “Captain America.” No other casting information has been released, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus returning as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine could happen, hypothetically. Mackie’s co-star Sebastian Stan is another possibility.

Marvel Studios is being tight-lipped on other details about the film. Even the plot is a mystery. However, all indications point to the film focusing on Mackie’s character as the protagonist.

Prior to closing the deal, Mackie gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly and discussed his return to the film.

“I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like, ‘Yo, man. Is this real?!’ I’m like, ‘I haven’t heard anything.’ That’s what I love about working for Marvel,” said Mackie. “They call you, they’re like, ‘Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what’s going on.’ So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything. What would be really bad is if the movie starts and I get blown out of the sky,” he joked.

In the last episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Mackie’s character became Captain America, and director Kari Skogland confirmed the news that Mackie would be the first Black Captain America.

“It’s a story about the first Black Captain America,” said Skogland. “How great is that?”

Mackie was trained at the prestigious Juilliard before starring in movies like the blockbuster hit “The Hurt Locker” and “The Banker.” In addition to the six Marvel films he’s starred in, Mackie also appeared in “The Hate U Give,” “Triple 9” and “Detroit.”

A director is not yet attached to the project. However, “Captain America 4” is expected to begin shooting in the summer of 2022 and debut sometime in 2023.
