Charlamagne Tha God Teams Up with ‘Boondocks’ Creator Aaron McGruder and Stephen Colbert for ‘Unapologetically Black’ Comedy Central Late-Night Series

Charlamagne Tha God is bringing the opinionated, outspoken personality that has made him one of the most-discussed hip-hop commentators in the game to a weekly late-night series on Comedy Central.

“The Breakfast Club” co-host’s series seeks to go beyond the typical guest interview and musical performance late-night format by including “a variety of deep dives, sketches, and social experiments” to keep audiences informed and entertained.

“This is one of those moments where I can show you better than I can tell you,” Charlamagne said in a statement. “This is the third talk show Chris McCarthy has done with me and those shows prepared me for this opportunity. My South Carolina brethren Stephen Colbert is the ultimate co-sign in the late-night space and he wouldn’t co-sign no bullsh-t! We are going to win an Emmy next year for best lighting direction I can feel it!!!”

McKelvey’s series also marks the return of Stephen Colbert to the comedy network since “The Colbert Show” ended in 2014. “For too long, the town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, has been underrepresented in late-night,” Colbert said. “I look forward to all the ways in which the fearless, peerless Charlamagne is going to change the game.”

Along with Colbert, “The Boondocks” creator Aaron McGruder is also on the list of executive producers, who is “excited” to see McKelvey continue to “smack the audience upside the head” with his no-holds-barred delivery of information. “Charlamagne knows exactly what he wants to do with this show – which is smack the audience upside the head every week and make sure they’re paying attention to the world around them,” said McGruder. “He is keenly aware of the power of his voice and always looking to use it to maximum effect, which requires both talent and courage. I’m very excited to be a part of this project.“

“Tha God’s Honest Truth With Lenard ‘Charlamagne’ McKelvey” premieres Sept. 17 at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
