“Growing Up Hip Hop” star Angela Simmons was the topic of conversation this week after she weighed in on the controversy and virginity discussion surrounding T.I. and his 18-year-old daughter Deyjah Harris.
Simmons appeared on the “Dr. Oz Show” this past week and discussed the public scrutiny she received after being vocal about remaining chaste until marriage. The mother of one, 32, claims she lost her virginity at age 28 to her late ex-fiance Sutton Tennyson and found herself pregnant soon afterward.
“Well, I publicly spoke about it and a lot of people knew that I was a virgin and I waited until I was like 28, and I went from virgin to pregnant,” Simmons reportedly said on an upcoming episode of the program, according to Madame Noire. “So it was a lot, and it was in public.”
Simmons claimed a lot of people accused her of lying about her virginity, adding, “People were like, ‘Were you lying or what happened?’ But it just happened really quick for me.”
“I mean, for me, I can understand why she [Deyjah Harris] didn’t speak about it publicly,” the reality star continued. “It was a choice of mine to speak about it, to encourage whoever wants to do it to know that it’s not not cool, you know? You have all the time in the world to do that.”
“I think we need to be careful before we presume that having sexual activity is not doing the right thing,” said Simmons. “Why are we assuming that that’s the wrong thing?”
Although it’s quite clear Simmons is now unfazed by the criticism once received, her remarks drew several reactions from social media users.
“Girl bye 😴😴 she still trying to sell this act ! It’s ok sis let it go. I wish she stop telling this lie !! 🤦🏾♀️ “
“She waited that long to lose it to somebody that wasn’t even good for her. Bye lie it’s too late.”
“I love that Angela is speaking about her mistakes she made. Go head girl live your reality. Noone else can ❤️”
Simmons and her late ex-fiancé welcomed their 3-year-old son Sutton Joseph Tennyson in 2016.
She previously addressed critics who blasted her for having a child out of wedlock on season 3 of “GUHH,” saying, “They judged me . … They think they know me and they really don’t. They have no idea. Of course, I heard a lot of chatter about me having a child out of wedlock. You got to imagine, my son has to look back at this one day, and, you know what, I’m human and it happened.”
