In November 2017, Sean Combs posted a video and told his followers that he’d change his name to “Love, aka Brother Love,” and afterward he didn’t really talk about the change.
But he may bring it up in the near future, because TMZ reports that Combs has taken legal action and filed a petition in a Los Angeles County Superior Court to change his name officially.
In the documents, it states the 49-year-old wants to change his middle name from Sean “John” Combs to Sean “Love” Combs. And he didn’t explain the reason why, it’s just something he wants to do.
This certainly isn’t the first time the New York-born mogul changed his name. Anyone who became familiar with him in the early ’90s, when he was an event promoter and a budding music exec, probably knew him as Puff Daddy or Puffy.
But after Combs was acquitted of charges related to a shooting in a New York City nightclub in 2001, he changed his name to P. Diddy — a moniker that was given to him by his artist The Notorious B.I.G. — for a fresh start.
“I’m not doing it as serious as Prince [but] I just want something fresh,” Combs told MTV back then. “I’m rockin’ with P. Diddy now — my man Biggie gave me that name.”
Eventually, the “P” dropped off, and the music exec just went with Diddy. He then toyed around with a few more names after that, but in 2014 Combs said he was going back to being Puff Daddy again.
“For the record, I did not change my name. I always have been and always will be PUFF DADDY! :),” he tweeted on March 24 of that year.
Combs hasn’t mentioned anything about changing his name to Love on his social media pages yet, and they still have the handle “Diddy” attached to them.
