Ivanka Trump Lit Up Over ‘Misleading’ Tweet Saying ‘We Musn’t Become Numb’ to Chicago Violence In Wake of Mass Shootings

A pair of tweets Ivanka Trump posted Tuesday has drawn major ire from those on social media as well as the mayor of Chicago.

Trump, who serves as a senior adviser to her father, President Donald Trump, tweeted that a deadly series of shootings in the Windy City over the weekend should not be overlooked in the wake of two fatal mass shootings that took place in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, this past weekend.

“As we grieve over the evil mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, let us not overlook that Chicago experienced its deadliest weekend of the year,” Ivanka Trump’s tweet posted August 6 read.

In a follow up tweet she said, “With 7 dead and 52 wounded near a playground in the Windy City- and little national outrage or media coverage- we mustn’t become numb to the violence faced by inner city communities every day.”

The presidential adviser’s tweets came a day after the death toll for the Texas shooting rose to 22 after Patrick Crusius opened fire on back-to-school shoppers at an Texas Walmart Saturday. It wasn’t 24 hours later before another gunman, Connor Betts, shot and killed nine people at Ned Peppers bar in Ohio.

The shootings in Chicago, which included two mass shootings, occurred between Friday and Sunday. CBS Chicago reported Monday they left 7 dead and 46 wounded.

Ivanka Trump’s turning her attention away from the massacres to focus on the Chicago incidents drew fierce criticism from Twitter users.

“Usually I hold my go f–k yourselves for your father and older brother for their absolute s–t takes, but today…you have become a true Trump. Congratulations and a gigantic go f–k yourself.”

“Tone deaf. Self absorbed. Privileged. Corrupt. Complicit. All the criteria for a white supremacist criminal’s daughter has been met. #TrumpCrimeFamily must GO.”

“Ivanka doesn’t give a damn about Chicago. Trust me. This is more of her racism. She may as well have said, ‘But what about Black on Black crime?’ If Ivanka wants to do something focus on her racist Daddy.”

Additionally, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who made history as the first Black woman in the office when she was elected to the city’s seat in April, took aim at Ivanka Trump’s posts Tuesday.

“It wasn’t a playground, it was a park. It wasn’t seven dead. It wasn’t 52 wounded in one incident, which is what this suggests. And it’s misleading,” Lightfoot said at a press conference as reported by the Chicago Tribune. “It’s important when we’re talking about people’s lives to actually get the facts correct, which one can easily do if you actually cared about getting it right.”

Lightfoot also addressed the “danger” of Ivanka Trump having Twitter and her 6.8 million followers at her disposal.

“That’s the danger of somebody with a platform and audience … that doesn’t know what they’re talking about and getting the fundamental facts wrong that they can easily figure out if they had the decency to actually reach out to us if they wanted to be a constructive and engaged partner,” the mayor said.

Finally, Lightfoot said she’s not going to let Ivanka Trump’s post detract from the cause at hand.

“What I’m focused on is actually helping run the city of Chicago and working hard every day with the superintendent and his leadership team to keep people in our city safe,” Lightfoot said. “I’m not going to be distracted by nonsense tweets from people who don’t know what they’re talking about.”
