Former NBA player Shannon Brown stopped by TV One’s “Sister Circle” on Tuesday and talked about joining Ice Cube‘s Big3 basketball league. But Brown also addressed his pending divorce from Monica for the first time, although he probably didn’t plan to.
The topic of the split came up after Brown talked about his summer basketball camp that recently opened, and he was seemingly surprised by the questioning.
“We know you’re going through something right now, so what have you learned about yourself and being able to co-parent and all that stuff,” asked co-host Rashan Ali.
The 33-year-old then said he isn’t burdened at all and people believe that because of the media.
“I haven’t been going through a lot of nothing,” he stated. “I feel like a lot of people take stories that they hear and they kind of blow it up for entertainment purposes. I learned how to ignore the negativity and just keep pushing forward. I think that’s what it’s all about. And it’s funny because I think a lot of people got the same idea.
“When they see me they’re like ‘Are you OK?’ And I’m like, ‘I’m fine,'” added Brown. “It’s part of it, though, when you’re in the public eye. You’ve got to be able to deal with whatever come along with it. I’m strong in my faith and my spirituality, so that’s what pull me or push me.”
Monica filed divorce papers in March of this year after rumors began that her marriage was heading south. She and Brown also posted cryptic social media messages around that time, which only made the breakup talk grow louder.
The former couple has a 5-year-old daughter named Laiyah Brown, and Monica has two sons from her previous relationship with the rapper Rocko named Rocko and Romelo.
After Brown’s interview surfaced, people weighed in rather quickly.
“So your family breaking up don’t affect you… I see why she left,” someone wrote on YouTube.
“Shannon Brown is such a class act,” another person commented. “Wishing him more blessings and success.”
