Days after Washington, D.C. attendees watching Tamar Braxton and Snoop Dogg in their play wondered about the singer’s mysterious absence midway through the show, there appears to be an answer.
Braxton was performing in “Redemption of a Dogg” at the Warner Theatre Nov. 9-11 and on Sunday’s 3 p.m., show, she did not come back out to play Snoop’s angel after the intermission, leading a dancer to take her spot. The play’s writer/director, Je’Caryous Johnson, was forced to confront questions about Braxton after the show but he only said an emergency kept her from coming back on.
“Please, it’s important that we pray for her, this is a very vulnerable time so please just pray for her. She’s sorry she couldn’t be here for this curtain call, but she did get a chance to be here for you and she did the best she could,” Johnson said in a video obtained by the Daily Mail Thursday.
It appears the emergency was brought on by a less than timely meal delivery. The British publication reported on Nov. 15 that Braxton “stormed out” when her meal failed to arrive backstage because she didn’t alert security that a friend would be bringing it to her. As such, a source said the pal was prohibited from entering the theater and Braxton threw a fit.
“This isn’t my first rodeo as it pertains to live theater, but I’ve never, ever seen anyone quit over something like this and disappoint their fans this way. She was completely hysterical and totally out of control,” said an insider told the publication. “She kept screaming, ‘she’s not here for this,’ talking about herself in the third person and then saying, “I’m so sick of this s—.’ Then she said, ‘you can do this damn show without her,’ again, addressing herself in the third person.”
The insider said Braxton was the center of several such incidents as Snoop Dogg’s semi-autobiographical play made the rounds across the country, including stops in Houston, Philadelphia and Chicago.
With even Snoop unable to convince Braxton to stay, a dancer put on her costume and quickly learned her lines as “American Idol” alum LaToya London sang Braxton’s songs off stage.
When the show concluded, the cast and crew held an emergency meeting to rework the play for the 7 p.m. performance. But that wasn’t needed as Braxton returned in time to resume her role.
“Not only was she unprofessional by walking off the first show and embarrassed her cast and the show producers, but after causing them to compromise their dinner break for an unscheduled rehearsal to rework the show without her, she just strolled up in the theater like she hadn’t just caused complete havoc just a few hours earlier,” the source divulged. “And let’s not forget the producers had already announced she wasn’t going to be in this show.”
Braxton nor her rep have responded to the reports of her getting up and leaving the production.
