Conservative firebrands Candace Owens and Tomi Lahren dug their claws into each other Thursday during a Twitter spat over rapper Kanye West‘s retreat from the political arena — more specifically Owens “BLEXIT” campaign.
The drama unfolded after Lahren took a dig at Owens for reportedly turning her back on the hip-hop star after he abandoned her campaign. In a series of tweets Tuesday, West announced he was stepping away from Owens’ movement encouraging a “Black exit” from the Democratic party, saying he felt he was being “used to spread messages I don’t believe in.”
West, 41, was rumored to have helped Owens design merchandise for the campaign, but both Ye and Owens clarified the rapper’s name was never attached to it.
“Are you gonna turn on Kanye now?” Lahren tweeted. “The ship was doomed to sink from the start but hunger for fame & money was placed over the movement. Funny how he was a ‘free thinker’ before and now he’s a ‘traitor.’ Sounds a lot like a tactic of the Left.
“You made your bed, now lie in it,” she added.
Owens, who lamented her failed friendship with the rap star, wasted no time firing back at the Fox News commentator.
“Tomi, I think I can speak on behalf of people on both sides of the political aisle and say we are sorry about your failed career,” she wrote. “The desperation to be relevant again by constantly subbing me and/or attacking @kathygriffin weekly—doesn’t bode well for any movement. Grow up.”
“I’m talking about Leftist tactics, conservative ideas & failure of identity politics,” Lahren replied. “YOU are talking about ME. If you’re trying to bait me into some Twitter war, it’s not going to work. It’s not about us. You can threaten me or lob low blows about my career but I’m not playing.”
Candace hit back still, writing, “You’ve taken about 30 swipes at myself, Charlie, and TPUSA over the course of the last 8 months. You’re too much of a coward to @ anybody and now you play victim. You’re a vile human being behind closed doors and an intellectually bankrupt one in front of the cameras.”
Their war of words garnered plenty of reaction and had fans choosing sides.
“I agree w/ you on this one, @TomiLahren she should’ve apologized publicly (on Twitter, not her blog), saying she misspoke, insinuated, alluded to, etc etc,” one critic wrote. “Instead, she acts like the ‘VICTIM’ & does the opposite — ironic, if anything. This is from someone who attended #YBLS ”
“Sorry Kanye didn’t come through,” wrote another. “He was not a reliable person like you are Candance. Keep on keeping on.
One person noted that while he doesn’t agree with Lahren on most issues, “she is spot on- hype a movement, which is so ridiculous from the start only to make a quick $$$ and stay in the alt-right spotlight-you are a complete disgrace for anybody who is really fighting for equality – and not too smart.”
Still, there were those who urged the two women to call a truce, arguing that such division isn’t what the GOP needs right now.
“@RealCandaceO @TomiLahren Honestly you two need to find common ground and work together. Tearing each other down is definitely not the answer! We need both of you!
