Kool G Rap Hires Attorneys to Take Finish Line to Court Over ‘Shopping While Black’ Charge

Hip-hop legend Kool G Rap is prepping a huge lawsuit against Finish Line after he was falsely accused of stealing a pricey pair of sneakers.

G Rap, who rose to fame as one half of the duo Kool G Rap & DJ Polo and as a member of the Juice Crew, believes he was only guilty of shopping while Black and that’s why he was initially charged with theft, TMZ reported Saturday, Oct. 13.

The rapper, whose real name is Nathaniel Thomas Wilson, was ordered to appear in court in June after an employee of a Pennsylvania mall Finish Line accused him of grabbing a pair of  $185 Nike LeBron 15s and walking out of the store.

Cops were called with the worker identifying the thief as an African-American man in his 40s. KGR had been shopping at the mall that day and a Finish Line employee followed him out to the parking lot. The worker scribbled down the registration number to the MC’s car and then officers showed up on the scene. They charged G Rap with misdemeanor theft.

But there was an issue with the charge. KRG’s attorneys Donte Mills and Lennon Edwards of Mills & Edwards LLP say police acted too soon and failed to examine the shop’s security footage. It showed that the “Ill Street Blues” performer never went into the Finish Line. Mills and Edwards claim the officers were simply looking for a Black man who fit the worker’s description and G Rap fit the bill.

The police finally discovered that the employee who followed him outside and got his vehicle information didn’t actually see him. As such, the case wound up being dismissed.

Still, G Rap isn’t letting it go easily. TMZ reported he and his lawyers are gearing up to take the shoe company to court in a massive battle.

The rapper has not spoken publicly about the case.
