When it comes to Odell Beckham Jr.’s hopes to become the NFL’s highest-paid receiver, the video that surfaced of him with a model earlier this month may hinder him.
The New York Giants wide receiver has been hoping to secure a new $100 million deal with the team, which would mean he’d earn upwards of $20 million annually. However, Owner John Mara told The New York Post Sunday, March 25 that the clip of him in bed with pizza and what appeared to be a blunt along with a model doing cocaine didn’t bode well for him.
“It wasn’t helpful,” Mara said of the clip which The Daily Mail reported was filmed at the Four Seasons George V hotel in Paris after Beckham met model Laura Cuenca at a club.
Mara acknowledged he was sent a separate copy of the clip, which wound up on Snapchat.
“I don’t want to comment about what was on the tape, I just want to stick to my previous statement,” he said according to 24/7 Sports. “I’m not gonna talk about his contract — contracts get done when they’re supposed to get done. We’ll just have to see what happens.”
As for how negotiations are going, Mara said, “I can’t answer that one way or the other,’’
“We’re certainly not shopping him if that’s what you’re asking,” The Post reported he said. “When you’re coming off a season when you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say anybody’s untouchable.’’
Currently, Beckham, who has been rehabilitating his fractured left ankle, is set to make $8.45 million this year. By 2019, he’s scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
