Cari Champion’s admission about interracial dating has ruffled some feathers online. The ESPN host said she has no problem with dating outside of her race. But what she said next had listeners bashing her.
“[I] kinda dated a while and I saw a guy that was white and I was like, ‘He’s corny as hell, I’m not fooling with him,'” she begins telling “Insecure” actress Yvonne Orji’s on “Ball Girl Magic” podcast in a December episode. “What it is, is that — much like [Black men] say about us — there’s not that back and forth, that struggle. What is that struggle? What is that struggle that I’m talking about? That back and forth that you don’t need to play. It’s not that game.”
Co-host Yvonne Orji, who hosts alongside NBA sideline reporter Ros Gold-Onwude, stepped in to clarify what Champion meant.
“In terms of like, when Black guys say they date white girls [they’re] like, ‘It’s just easier sometimes,” Orji says. “Is that what you mean?”
“That’s what they say,” Champion responds. “It is a stereotype. It’s not right but you do feel that way. Why do you feel that way? I don’t know. I don’t have the answer for that.”
