Ray Lewis and Shannon Sharpe at Odds Over Kaepernick, Agree Cam Newton’s Views on Racism are Distorted

On the Sept. 8 edition of FOX Sports One’s “Skip and Shannon Undisputed,” former Baltimore Ravens defender Ray Lewis comments on Carolina QB Cam Newton’s recent statements about racism but also delve into Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest.

In August, Newton told GQ in a profile that racism is no longer an issue in this country.

“Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”

In the segment above, Lewis and co-host Shannon Sharpe say Newton needs to reevaluate his comments.

“What is the point when I am an Afro-American quarterback and I scare people,” Lewis starts. “Who do you scare … On the football field, absolutely. [Defensive backs] have a problem because you are bigger than most DB’s… Outside of that, every Afro-American people who have came through your life are all the same people. We don’t scare people outside of the game right. When he says that racism does not exist—fans are not racist. Live a little. Everybody is praising now when everything is great. But when things go bad, you have to react to that.”

Lewis urges Newton to slow down and think before speaking.

However, Sharpe gives the QB a quick rundown of the racial backlash Newton received after the Super Bowl 50 loss.

The commentator says that Newton is riding the fence in order to appease his critics.

“98 percent of the people were down with you,” he opines.” If you don’t think racism exists — when you didn’t talk to media — jump on your timeline. When you were dabbing and doing all of that — jump on your timeline… Cam was born in Atlanta — the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. They got the King center 10-15 minutes from Cam’s home…”

Later on in the show, Lewis comments on San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest.

He advises Kaepernick to go into the hoods and become a real activist “to effect change.”
