The New York Police Department says one person is dead and three others are wounded, including rapper Troy Ave from a shooting at a T.I. concert. The Atlanta MC was scheduled to perform at the Irving Plaza show May 25 in New York City, but gunfire sounded before he took the stage.

Officials said shots rang out from the venue’s green room on the third floor at around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. Rappers Maino and Uncle Murda were on stage opening the show at the time. They were two of four acts scheduled to appear alongside headliner T.I. and Anderson .Paak, according to T.I.’s official Instagram. Troy Ave was not on the list of acts due to appear.

Of the four people caught in the crossfire, police say Ave, 30, is getting treatment at New York University Langone Medical Center after getting shot in the leg. One victim – a 33-year-old man shot in the stomach – was pronounced dead at Beth Israel Hospital. Bellevue Hospital is treating two other victims, including a 34-year-old man who was shot in the chest; he is in critical condition. The other patient is a 26-year-old woman in serious but stable condition with a leg wound.

As of late Wednesday night, police say the motive for the shooting was unclear and no arrests have been made.

ABC reports security and metal detectors were used at the venue. Police say proper protocol was followed and evidence of firearms was collected from the scene.

An eyewitness told CBS New York two people started arguing in the VIP area “and then everybody started running because they heard the [gun]shots.”

Another witness, Rapper Fatboy SSE, told BBC Newsbeat he was just about to enter Irving Plaza with a group when “all of a sudden we seen people running out.”

“Then someone told me a shot had gone off,” he adds. “I was thinking, ‘How did someone get a weapon inside the venue?’ And then I heard two more shots. ‘Bow, Bow’. And that’s when everyone started running. It got more hectic and people were trampling and running over people.”

None of the acts involved have spoken out about the incident and T.I.’s reps referred all questions to the NYPD.

Concert goers confirm police reports on Twitter. User @SweetKixx posted photos from the scene and said shots were fired before T.I. took the stage.

Marco, who said the concert was free in an earlier tweet, posted video of the reaction to the gunfire. Attendees are seen scrambling to evacuate.

Rapper Immortal Technique commented on the incident, saying he hopes it is “not a reflection us as a people.”

And Meg, another user, posted a video of the aftermath as anttendees walked outside.
