Despite being the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar is no exception to bumbling race depictions. The movie’s famous Na’vi are a primitive tribal alien race, played by a number of nonwhite actors like Zoe Saldana and Laz Alonso. Meanwhile, all the humans in the film are depicted as white. And, of course, the disabled white U.S. Marine Jake Sully becomes the hero of the tribe, even outperforming the best among the natives.

Avatar isn't perfect. It definitely has that "white savior" thing going on which is a bit annoying, but I wouldn't call the Na'vi a "bumbling race." They seem far from it. They are physically superior to humans, and they fought against superior technology and won.

  4. Brian Thornton says:

  6. Let's not forget 'Predator,' which is probably even more overtly racist than some of the titles mentioned: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dUHqPRiZ0wQ/TBiVVj1FsSI/AAAAAAAAAFc/ovSN7hrsi-Y/s1600/predators-pic-34.jpg.

I don't think the Godfather belongs on this list. Why would a movie about the Mafia have black characters? As far as the they are animals anyways and the Cadillac comment that was just being realistic. That's how the mafia guys thought. Also, the movie confirms what a lot of us believe, that the Mafia deliberately trafficked drugs in black neighborhoods.

  8. Please add Exodus to this list, I was left scratching my head thinking….. them folks stop doing black face right?

  9. Yes, only when the savior showed them how.
