7 Celebrities Who Are Proud Atheists

1. Morgan Freeman It's fairly ironic that Morgan Freeman, an actor who has played God twice, is an atheist. Perhaps it's more true to say that he has indicated he has mixed feelings about religion in general; in separate interviews he has stated that he does not consider himself a man of God, and that he believes that we (humans) invented God. 2. Hugh Hefner Considering that he has pretty much devoted his life to the promotion of sex and hedonism, it's not at all surprising that High Hefner would find the moral codes of most organized religions a bit confining. Hefner has expressed on several occasions that he believes religion is a myth. 3. Ayaan Hirsi Ali Ali is an author, politician and activist, most famous for her book "Infidel," which criticizes, among other things, the practice of female genital mutilation and Islam, in her native Somalia. In light of the difficulties she's had with the religion into which she was born, it is perhaps no wonder that since her immigration to the Netherlands, and then the United States, she has become a confirmed atheist. However many people have noted that she has perhaps taken her atheism too far, calling for violent action against Islam, and supporting the violation of First Amendment rights to those who practice it. 4. Daniel Radcliffe The 24-year-old actor, best known for playing Harry Potter has been quoted as saying that he considers himself a "relaxed atheist." He has also expressed an admiration for Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins, a scientist who is also a very outspoken atheist. Interestingly, Dawkins himself is purportedly not as big a fan of Radcliffe's work, having stated that the Harry Potter books promoted witchcraft, which he felt was anti-scientific. 5. Tyler, The Creator Odd Future front man Tyler, The Creator has caused quite a lot of controversy in his career, from his homophobic comments to his feuds with fellow musicians, so his remarks about religion seem to be par for the course. It's not just that the musician has claimed to be an atheist, he's also joked about being a satanist, and he was quoted as saying, “That n*** ain’t real!”, in response to a question about Jesus. 6. Keanu Reeves Despite rumors that he practices Buddhism, actor Keanu Reeves maintains that he does not prescribe to any particular religion, and generally considers himself to be atheist. However, he has said that he believes more now in the idea of heaven and hell than he did before working on the 2005 movie "Constantine," so perhaps his view on religion is not quite so static. Either way, Reeves has been known as a generous philanthropist, having donated millions to AIDS and cancer research. 7. Brad Pitt It is probably more accurate to refer to Brad Pitt as agnostic, rather than atheist. He was quoted in the Hollywood Reporter as saying that he oscillates between the two. This may be a result of having grown up in a household that was very religious. Still, it doesn't seem to have had a negative affect on him, as the actor is now known for his activism and charity work.
