Solange Knowles is known as a talented songstress, an inspirational artist, and one of today’s most fabulous break through fashionistas but above all else she sees herself as a mother first and opened up about how she balances her motherly duties with her career as a musician.
In a recent interview with Brooklyn Magazine Solange revealed that at the end of the day she isn’t any different from other mothers in the world. Just like other dedicated moms she has many duties to balance in addition to taking care of her adorable 8-year-old son Julez.
“[It] is definitely a balancing act and it is not at all easy,” she said. “I do the best I can, which involves a lot of saying no to things, actually, and a lot of really organized scheduling and a lot of help, to be honest.”
Unlike many celebs, Solange’s version of “help” doesn’t include expensive nannies or day care services. Instead, she would rather rely on family and she even made a major move back to the east coast to make sure Julez had the opportunity to grow up around his family.
“We were living in LA and I was writing and recording this album literally between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm every day becase that was the time that Julez was in school,” Beyonce’s younger sister explained. “We were completely isolated, we didn’t have any family or long term friends there, and we didn’t have that support system built in there that we have in New York.”
That’s when she decided to pack up her home in LA and take off to New York.
“We really wanted Julez to have the experience that we had growing up – being able to drop in on his aunt’s house and being able to hang out with Grandma and see our friends and have that experience of actually having a soccer game and having family show up,” Solange continued.
Needless to say, being a mom is more than just knowing what to say “no” to and making sure your children have family around, it’s also about taking on the day to day tasks that mean a lot in a child’s life down the road.
Despite having an extremely demanding schedule Solange made sure that she never gave up any of her duties as a single mom raising a young boy in New York.
“I played BAM on Friday, and the following morning I had to pick Julez up from a sleepover and take him to parties… Sometimes I feel like nothing more than a next-level carpool driver,” she joked as she commented on driving her son around. “It’s the birthday parties here. The birthday parties are so, so real.”
Meanwhile, we’re all a little curious about how Beyonce will be able to manage driving Blue Ivy around since the powerhouse songstress is usually busy doing shows over seas.
We have a feeling that it won’t be long before Solange has to drive around both her son and her new niece.
