Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is rehabbing from surgery to a torn ACL and LCL, but Dr. James Andrews told the NFL Network Friday that Griffin is “way ahead of schedule.”
“We have him well on his way,” Andrews told the NFL Network. “His recovery is way ahead of schedule so far. We don’t have to do much but try to hold him back, if you want to know the truth.”
However, Andrews quickly added:
“Our whole mode for him though is to do what is best for his career, not necessarily what is best for the first game next season. So all of that has to be put on hold and let him get well.”
Griffin sustained a sprained LCL against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14 and he missed two games. He returned for Washington’s first-round playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks, where he tore two knee ligaments in the loss, with surgery a few days later.
Reports surfaced earlier last week that Griffin would have a legitimate chance to start in the Redskins 2013 season opener. His father, Robert Griffin II, told USA Today Sports’ Jim Corbett that he thought his son would be ready for the season opener.
Adidas, Griffin’s biggest sponsor, jumped on the news and even debuted their “All in for Week 1” ad campaign, centered on Griffin’s comeback for next season.
But Griffin III quickly took to Twitter Tuesday:
“Feel like I need to say this..Although my goal is to start Week 1, that doesn’t mean I will compromise my career to do so,” Griffin tweeted.
Griffin was voted offensive rookie of the year in 2012, beating out Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. He threw for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading the Redskins to their first NFC East division title in 13 years.
