A new trailer has been let loose on the internet for Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. Korine is best known for writing and directing supremely odd films, often featuring some pretty explicit and disturbing content, has touched something of the mainstream here. After all, it stars James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, and Selena Gomez. Of course, Franco is playing a thug with cornrows, a grill, and a Southern accent, and Hudgens and Gomez are part of a girl gang that pulls off robberies, so it’s a loose definition of “mainstream.”
The trailer is full of NSFW naughtiness and general colorful chaos. And none of it looks terribly appealing. But here’s the thing: everyone who’s actually seen Spring Breakers? Has loved it. Like, a lot. And that right there is enough to pique my curiosity.
