Serena Williams Turns 30; Named UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador

Things are looking up for tennis champion Serena Williams. After a courageous comeback to the sport she loved was marred by a momentary lapse in judgment, Serena is back on top.

Last week at the 2nd Annual Social Good Summit, Serena Williams was awarded the role as UNICEF’s latest Goodwill Ambassador. If you’re unaware, Serena has had an active role in opening secondary schools in Matooni, Kenya, working with at-risk youth in America and working directly with the UNICEF on their vaccination campaign in Ghana.

The UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said this of Serena,

“Serena Williams isn’t just a world tennis champion, she is a champion for children – and a passionate advocate for providing every child with a quality education… We are delighted that Serena is joining us as UNICEF’s newest Goodwill Ambassador and look forward to working together to win for children.”

Williams stated in kind,

“I believe all children deserve the chance to make something of their lives… I am committed to helping UNICEF provide a quality education to children to help them build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.”

Serena joins the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Harry Belafonte, Mia Farrow, David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Yuna Kim and Shakira.

And no less important, Serena Wiliams turns 30 years old today! Congrats to Serena on both achievements!
