Donald Trump invited children back to the White House for a wholesome announcement that ended with people cringing.
Kids have a way of softening public images and creating a gentle gaze. Trump can benefit from both as his approval rating continues to hover in the lower 30th percentile.
His trick to buy public favor this week required him to lean into his fatherly, or grandfatherly, persona.

Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, wealthy donor Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, and his wife, Susan Dell, a group of children and families, and others joined the president for an Oval Office announcement on Oct. 7.
He revealed that Trump Accounts now automatically enroll kids born Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028.
The accounts are IRAs intended to set up the next generation for financial success and to fuel the “booming economy.”
“If all goes well, which I think it will, they’ll end up being quite rich by the time they’re 18, and then 21, and as time goes by,” Trump said.
Adding, “This money is your child’s future. And when you were a child in the old days, your child would hit 18, and there’s nothing.”
But his special guests didn’t leave the White House empty-handed.
The president remained seated behind the Resolute Desk while handing out presidential challenge coins and his signature black Sharpie marker used to sign executive orders.
The students stepped to him one by one, most smiling, and then quickly walked off.
One child, a lone Black girl, hoped the PR stunt was over. Photos show her looking confused, hands clasped tightly, while the other kids smiled.
The same girl looked prepared to flee the room when Trump uttered a last-minute remark.
She nearly made a break for it, quickly backing away from Trump as he handed her the commemorative gift while she kept her head down. “That kid ran lol. She knows a [expoliter] when she sees one,” said one online viewer.
“Thank you all very much. You can stand up or — stay there,” the president said. The kids group stood to the right of the desk. Reporters filled the area directly in front of them.
Then he dropped a bizarre compliment.
“You’re so good looking,” said Trump. “Stay there. The press won’t — they can admire you. It’s the way they used to look.”
The seconds-long interaction set off a “creepy alert” for X users.
“Notice how everyone in the room tensed up when he said that. I promise you America, yall are not angry enough,” one person remarked.
The politician’s off-putting compliment provoked another user to question, “What is wrong with him? Who are these children?”
The pile-on continued as many accused Trump of exploiting the kids.
“I wouldn’t let my child near that guy and shame on those people for using kids as props,” a third social media user tweeted.
A fourth person said, “Who placed that beautiful Black child in the same room with him? He hates Black women.”
Bisignano, Bessent, and the Dells all glanced at the press when Trump made the “good looking” comment.
Children rarely appear at the White House, but when they do, people notice how awkward the moments are.
In August, Trump hosted a back-to-school event in the Rose Garden and boasted about kids. The children seemed disinterested, looking everywhere except at the president.
Trump’s luck wasn’t any better in May when kids gathered in the Oval Office for his Presidential Fitness Test Award announcement. They blankly stared as he ranted about physical fitness and war readiness.
At one point, Trump awkwardly asked one boy, “You think you can take me in a fight?”
The room filled with laughter while critics online groaned at the joke.
