Some people may have been introduced to Kandi Burruss from her being a cast member on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” however, she rose to fame from being an integral member of the ’90s R&B girl group, Xscape.
Kandi Burruss posted a clip on TikTok of her with the rest of the ladies from the 1993 group; Tiny Harris, Tamika Scott, and LaTocha Scott, as they practiced for their upcoming show on Saturday in New Orleans .
In the clip, it showed the ladies singing their 1993 hit single, “Understanding” which was song from their debut album, “Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha.” During the 37-second clip, Kandi hit her infamous whistle note, and fans went crazy in the comment section.
“It’s the note at the end! You better sing!”
“The noteeee Kandi!”
“Oh Kandi was hungry, because she ate!”
“Kandiii, girl be killing them high notes!”
“Them housewives better put some respect on Kandi’s name, what a voice!”
Kandi wasn’t just a vocalist, she also contributed her writing skills to the group and wrote songs for the ladies.
In 2021 Kandi did an interview with Entertainment Weekly where she said, “Jermaine (Dupri) was the main writer, and he would allow us to write a little bit here, a little bit there.”
She continued, “I would sit and watch him write sometimes and pick a part what he was doing, and how he would come up with these ideas. I feel like I was a sponge around him.”
The 46-year-old explained how Dupri let the ladies write for their sophomore album, “Off the Hook.”
She told the magazine company, “I knew that I could write, but I just needed him to give me a shot. So I was glad he finally started opening up a little it, it was good to see that song did become a single and it did do well.”
As happens to many music groups, dissension intruded on their circle, which caused the ladies to officially disband in 1998 after the release of their third studio album, “Traces of My Lipstick.” The breakup was due to “Their egos playing a role in pulling them apart as did outside influences,” as Showbiz CheatSheet reported.
After the group split, Kandi went on and tested her songwriting skills. She ended up writing numerous hits for different music groups such as TLC, Destiny’s Child, and NSYNC. In 2000, she even won a Grammy for her writing contribution on TLC’s hit song, “No Scrubs.”
After 19 years, Kandi and the rest of the Xscape ladies reunited for a reset of the group. The now grown women did a few concerts with one another and had an opportunity to create a reality show, “Xscape: Still Kickin’ It,” that premiered on Bravo in 2017.
The group now has a new upcoming reality show with fellow female R&B group SWV that will also be on Bravo.
