“Be proud of your crown.” That’s the message offered by actress
Jada Pinkett Smith when it comes to women and their hair. She disclosed during her storytime session on March 22 the biggest regret she had while working in Hollywood.
Pinkett Smith shot to fame in the early 1990s with guest appearances and cameos in various shows. She ultimately got her big break in 1991, following her role as Lena James in “The Cosby Show” spinoff titled “A Different World.” Since then, the actress has gone on to star in many hit films and series.
Pinkett Smith explained in the recording that despite her success in the entertainment industry, she was left with many hair regrets, especially on what appeared to be promo covers. The 50-year-old said, “I had some definite hair regrets for sure, specifically on covers. It was just ‘what the hell.’ ”
She added that during her rise to fame the beauty standards in Hollywood followed the European trend, including straight, elongated hair.
Pinkett Smith said, “Being a black woman and dealing with hair in Hollywood, especially in the era that I came up in, having your hair look as European as possible was always a thing, and that was really challenging. You know because I liked my hair out wild and curly but nobody wanted that.”
The actress continued the conversation by providing the specific reason she decided to conform to the set standards. “So I always had to do my hair in ways that didn’t feel natural to me because of trying to play the game. So if I’m doing a cover, everybody’s like ‘No, we love your hair straight and flowy’ and it’s like ‘all right, cool, but that’s not what my hair likes to do.’ ”
Pinkett Smith wrapped up the video by saying those particular moments that occurred in her life helped her become who she is today and set her own standards for beauty.
“I had to learn to get the courage to just go nah I’m not doing that. Which is why I feel the freedom today. I don’t give two craps what people feel about this bald head of mine ’cause, guess what, I love it.”
In addition to the post, Pinkett Smith disclosed in the caption the reason she shared this story was because of the Crown Act that the House of Representatives recently passed.
She wrote, “Crown Act. Be proud of your crown.”
