Jada stunned her followers on July 12 by posting a short video of her beautiful new buzzcut. In the selfie-style clip, she moved her head slowly from side to side to give her audience a good view of the front side of the look.
In the caption, the “Set It Off” actress explained that the new cut was inspired by her daughter Willow. She wrote, “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go BUT … my 50’s are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed❣️😜.”
The 20-year-old Willow shared a photo resting her head on her mother’s shoulders while Jada posed naturally with her buzzcut. The “Transparency” singer became the first to debut her mother’s new look with this photo.
Willow’s poetic caption reads, “🙏🏾.” While this is Jada’s first time going bald this is certainly not Willow’s. The “I Am Legend” actress shocked the world in the middle of her “Whip My Hair” tour by shaving her head at 12 years old.
People didn’t know whether to be shocked because she shaved her head at such a young age, or because she ditched the long braids and locs, which she used as part to swing around when performing the “Whip My Hair” song.
In 2018 Willow explained that she shaved her head as an act of rebellion. She told InStyle, “I was just over it. The truth of the song is ‘do want you want;’ it doesn’t actually have to do with hair. ‘Whip your hair’ is just a symbol for doing whatever you want.”
Since then, Willow shaved her head again in 2020 as promotion for her group’s album “Anxiety.” She did a performance art piece in a gallery where she trapped herself in glass boxes for viewers to look at them as she and her band mate cycled “through emotional states: paranoia, rage, sadness, numbness, euphoria, strong interest, compassion and acceptance,” which are all phases of anxiety. In one of the phases, her band mate Tyler Cole shaved her head.
Willow let her hair grow out for a bit, rocking teeny-weeny Afros, braids, and wigs, but it looks like she was ready to let the hair go again.
As for Jada, in 2018 the singer/ actress revealed that she was battling hair loss and would cover it up by wearing hair wraps.
“It was terrifying when it first started,” she said. “I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair in my hands. And I was just like, ‘Oh my God, am I going bald?’ It was one of those times in my life when I was literally shaking with fear,” she said during an episode of “Red Table Talk.” She also said she got a lot of tests done, but doctors were still baffled as to why she was losing her hair.
Fans and friends commented on Jada’s new look. Beyoncé’s mother Tina Lawson wrote, “Beautiful ❤️It Just shows that beautiful face and soulful eyes more prominently.”
One fan said, “Welcome to the bald squad.”
Pinkett Smith even became an inspiration to others. “She makin me wanna do it again lol” said one person, while another wrote, “Absolutely stunning. I’ve been thinking about doing this for so many years… might have to jump on it too!”
