‘I Felt Like I Was Out of Control’: Nick Cannon Sets the Record Straight About His Celibacy Journey Amid News of Eighth Child on the Way

Last September, Nick Cannon vowed to “take a break” from having more children after welcoming his seventh child in June 2021 and initially claiming he wanted to expand his already large family further. However, fans were left confused last month after the longtime host announced that he was expecting baby number eight with Breana Tiesi.

During a recent episode of his self-titled daytime television show, the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” star set the record straight about his “celibacy journey,” revealing that he didn’t take the proposed time off when he initially announced his plans and that he didn’t start actually until after learning that he was going to be a father again.

“My therapist was one of the ones who said I should probably be celibate, and the reason why is because I had shared that news about Bre being pregnant,” the 41-year-old told guest Angela Yee.

After learning of Tiesi’s pregnancy, the comedian said he “didn’t know what to do” and was trying to “get a grasp” on his life. Cannon shared that he actually “felt like I was out of control, and honestly, the celibacy did help me through the journey of getting one with myself and dealing with this.”

“That was the reason why I started my celibacy journey back then,” he added. “So for anyone who’s thinking, ‘Oh, he wasn’t celibate,’ I was!”

Still, Cannon revealed he isn’t ruling the possibility of having more children even as he prepares for the arrival of his latest baby. “I just want to have as many children as I can … provide for and be a good father, too,” the actor said. “I want to be the best father that I could possibly be, but I’m not counting out ever having more children.”

The host first became a father in 2011, when he welcomed twins Monroe and Moroccan with ex-wife and Grammy Award-winning singer Mariah Carey. He then welcomed his son Golden — who turns five in February 2022 — and 13-month-old daughter Powerful Queen with Brittany Bell in 2017 and 2020, respectively.

In June 2021, Abby De La Rosa gave birth to twins Zion and Zillion. Cannon and Alyssa Scott had son Zen in that same month; in December 2021, Zen passed away after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Cannon and Tiesi will be welcoming their baby boy sometime later this year.
