Sha’Carri Richardson is sharing her story in a new documentary, “Sub Eleven Seconds,” about her road to becoming a record-breaking track-and-field athlete.
Richardson was just 21 years old on June 21, 2021, when she won hearts everywhere with her impressive performance in the women’s 100-meter race with a time of 10.86 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
She became a media darling for her record-breaking win as well as for touching the crowd when she hugged her grandmother after her historic win.
Sundance described Richardson’s documentary as a “poetic imagining” of the athlete’s quest to go to the Olympics.
The documentary synopsis describes the work as “a rumination on time, loss, and hope, Sub Eleven Seconds is a poetic imagining of the quest of Sha’Carri Richardson — a young track and field athlete — to achieve her dream of qualifying for the Olympic Games.”
The track star shared the documentary’s trailer on her Twitter page.
“Time is my blessing and my curse,” said Richardson. “On the track, I’ve been blessed to run fast. Off the track, time has cheated me. You don’t know when something or someone will be taken from you.”
The track star, who lost her mother one week before the Olympic trials, was later suspended for testing positive for THC, the ingredient in marijuana. Richardson admitted to using marijuana to help her cope while grieving her mom’s death. She spoke with “TODAY” following her suspension.
“(I’m) not making an excuse or looking for any empathy in my case,” she explained. “But, however, being in that position in my life, finding out something like that, something that I would say is probably one of the biggest things that have impacted me … that definitely was a very heavy topic on me.”
“Sub Eleven Seconds” will debut at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The festival began on Jan. 20, and will be continue through Jan. 30. The annual festival takes place in Park City, Utah.
