It’s been over a decade since Lil Mama crashed Alicia Keys and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards in 2009. While Lil Mama has said in the past that she’s had suicidal thoughts about the incident, it seems social media won’t allow her or their fans to forget the shocking moment.
Recently, Keys sat down with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on their podcast “Drink Champs” to discuss the upcoming release of her new double album, “Keys.” In a now-viral clip of their discussion, N.O.R.E. asked how upset she was when Lil Mama randomly hopped on stage in the middle of her and Jay-Z’s performance.
Keys chuckled and said that she was going to tell “the truth of all the truths.” She went on to retell her side of the story, saying, “All I know is we were on stage. Jay was here, I was here,” she said, using her hands to explain how she and Jay-Z were positioned.
“Somehow, however she got over here, I didn’t even bear witness to. The whole show, I was so focused on making it amazing. I went backstage and Jay was like, ‘So, you ain’t see that?’ ” she recalled. Mimicking Jay-Z’s reaction, Keys said, “He was like, ‘Nah, you ain’t just see what just happened?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we killed it. That’s what just happened.’ ”
Keys has touched on the subject a few times recently and although we have rarely heard Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, talk about it, he did address the situation just a few days after it happened. He called into “The Angie Martinez Show” and explained why he was displeased with how Lil Mama decided to bombard the stage.
He said, “To interrupt that moment for us, I don’t think that was the right thing to do. It was a lot of planning that went into that performance. To disrupt that was out of line.”
