Drake said that deciding to reveal a photo of his son Adonis Graham was an impromptu decision on his part.
He spoke with Lil Wayne on Wayne’s Apple Music radio show “Young Money Radio” about his child. It was during an interview that was posted to YouTube on May 2.
Drake revealed a photo of the 2-year-old Graham back in March. He told Wayne at the 54:54 mark that he showed the picture because he wanted to live somewhat of a normal life with his child even though he’s a global superstar.
“I posted those pictures. It was great for me,” Drake told Wayne. “It was great to just share that with the world. It wasn’t even anything I talked to anybody about or anything I planned. I just woke up one morning and was like, ‘You know what? This is just something that I want to do.'”
“I want to be able to go places with my son and share memories with my son,” he added. “I don’t want to feel like just because of a life choice I made to be quote, unquote celebrity that I got to, like, make everybody live under this blanket.”
Drake explained to Wayne that he watched him be a “functioning rap father” over the years and it gave him confidence to be open about being a celebrity dad himself.
The world first heard of Drake’s child during his battle with Pusha T in 2018. Pusha revealed the information in his song “The Story of Adidon,” a response to Drake’s “Duppy Freestyle,” where he mentioned Pusha’s then-fiancée Virginia Williams, whom he’s since married.
Graham’s mother is Sophie Brussaux, a former adult film star who’s now a painter. Pusha explained in a 2018 interview that he exposed Drake as a father and revealed other things about him once he heard his fiancée’s name being mentioned.
“All bets are off because of that,” said Pusha. “That alone causes all bets to be off.”
Drake spoke about the battle during an interview on Rap Radar last year and explained that he has no desire to patch things up with Pusha T similarly to how he settled things with Meek Mill after their conflict.
“I have no desire to mend anything with that person,” Drake explained. “That situation just went where it went. There is no turning back.”
