Detroit rapper Tee Grizzley’s aunt and manager Jobina Brown died from gunfire on Tuesday after she was shot while riding in back of a car as she and her nephew were traveling together on the city’s east side. She was 41 years old.
The Detroit News reports the rapper sitting in the passenger seat at the time, and he wasn’t hit, nor was the driver. It’s not clear if Grizzley was the intended target, but Brown was shot in her left side. The driver said he heard her scream right before hearing three to four gunshots.
The Chrysler 300 they were in had come to a stop shortly before the shooting, and the gunman was on foot when he opened fire.
Grizzley stayed at the scene while the driver called police, according to TMZ. Brown later died at the hospital after she was rushed there by ambulance.
Nearby residents were startled by the 9 p.m. burst of deadly gun violence.
“I turned down the TV and I realized it was outside. I quickly opened the door and then quickly shut the door again,” Barney McDowell told Fox 2 Detroit.
The shooting happened directly in front of McDowell’s house, which he had just purchased. The witness also said he saw Brown lying in the street until the ambulance arrived.
Grizzley hasn’t addressed the shooting yet, but some from the hip-hop community have reached out and offered their condolences.
“They place the heaviest loads on the strongest backs,” wrote T.I. Wednesday on Instagram. “Our prayers & condolences lil bro… Stay strong… I’m here if you need me King 👑 #RIPJB🙏🏽.”
Lil Yachty also sent an Instagram message next to a photo of he and Grizzley standing together.
“Praying for my bro. One of my real friends. In my thoughts till I hear from you. Love you broski 🙏🏾,” wrote Yachty.
Reportedly, Grizzley hired Brown as his manager two years ago and he’s seen great success as a result. Brown also managed Detroit rapper Sada Baby.
