Lauryn Hill Slapped with Lawsuit from American Express After Owing Nearly $400K in Credit Card Debt

Lauryn Hill owes American Express close to $400,000 after raking up that much in credit card debt.

The credit card company has sued the former Fugees frontwoman, according to a filing obtained by Bossip Friday, Sept. 28. In the documents, Hill is accused of skipping out on paying a six-figure credit card bill, which tallies up to $371,892.39.

The lawsuit from American Express National Bank states the “Killing Me Softly” singer managed to owe the debt based on “the price of goods sold and/or services rendered,” but failed to pay it. Along with Hill being listed as a defendant in the filing made in New Jersey Superior Court earlier in September Hill’s company, “MLH Touring,” is also named.

American Express said in court documents it tried to collect what Hill owes them but claims the performer “often refused” and the bill has gone on unpaid.

The gossip site said it wasn’t clear at the time of its report what Hill has specifically dropped so much dough on.

This is the latest bout of legal trouble for Hill.

In July, she sued her cousin who she accused of failing to pay back a $65,000 loan.

Gerald Hill is being taken to court for breach of contract as the performer claims Gerald never planned to pay her back after a year. She said he agreed to pay 10 percent interest if the loan wasn’t paid back in three months.

As for her AmEx suit, she has not responded. But on Saturday, Sept. 29, she did post a Facebook message to fans apologizing for having to cancel a concert in Houston after doctors urged her to rest her strained voice.
