Mark Sanchez is “likely to have surgery” and could miss the rest of the 2013 season, according to league sources. Dr. James Andrews examined Sanchez and confirmed Wednesday that the quarterback has a labral tear in his right shoulder that would take the rest of the year to heal if he opts for surgery.
Sanchez could also choose the option of rehabbing the shoulder and play later in the season, sources said,, but he will likely have to go under the knife at the end of the football year.
Sanchez told ESPN late Wednesday night: “If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews’ office. I would’ve stayed and got the surgery.” Asked if he wanted to deny that he was likely to have surgery, Sanchez texted: “There’s nothing to report. It’s reckless.”
Sanchez is expected to decide whether he would get the surgery within the next couple days, sources said.
With the team’s commitment to rookie Geno Smith it may make sense for the Sanchez to get the surgery. That way he will be ready to compete on another team next year.
