A new full length trailer has been released online for the upcoming film The Host, a new Stephenie Meyer adaptation sure to make any fan shriek with delight and any parent sigh with weariness.
Set in a future not too distant from our own, The Host tells the tale of a parasitic alien soul injected into the body of Melanie Stryder. Instead of carrying out her race’s mission of taking over the Earth, “Wanda” (as she comes to be called) forms a bond with her host and sets out to aid other free humans.
As one can tell from the trailer, that bond is in large parts due to a romance sparked between the leads, the talented Saoirse Ronan and baby-faced Max Irons. Andrew Niccol, director of last year’s In Time, 2005’s Lord of War and a similarly styled Gattaca, helmed the project and had a hand in the screenplay. With only a limited time left in the Twilight series, The Host looks as if it wishes to fulfill the needs of any Meyer fans looking for just one more doomed love story.
Of course, the film is based on a 2008 science fiction novel by the infamous Stephenie Meyer. The Host found success on the New York Times’ bestseller list for 26 weeks and 36 weeks on the LA Times’ bestseller list. Never one to shy away from implicit themes, Meyer describes The Host as a story revolving around “what a gift it is to just have a body, and really love it.”
The trailer doesn’t look all that different from any other story involving a group of young people coming together against adversity for what they think is right. With the romance, of course. The film doesn’t really look to be tackling any new themes here that haven’t already been brilliantly taken care of in the film world in terms of post-apocalyptic eras or dystopias. In other words, it looks like an extension of Twilight, tailored for fans of Twilight. For better or worse. Enjoy the trailer below.
